1-Trichloroethane
1 Trichloroethane is a synthetic chemical found in building materials, paints,
cleaning products and some aerosol sprays. It is a known ozone depleting chemical
and polluter. If spilt, it can penetrate concrete and contaminate the soil and
groundwater. The main risk of exposure is through breathing contaminated air,
especially near landfill sites where it can contaminate the air, soil and groundwater.
It can cause dizziness, loss of co-ordination and damage to the breathing passages
& nervous system. In high doses, it can lower blood pressure and cause the
heart to stop beating.
