CFCs
Known as chlorofluorocarbons, CFCs are synthetic, odourless and non-toxic chemicals
made up of chlorine, fluorine and carbon. They have been used for years as propellants
in aerosol cans, refrigerants in white household goods and degreasers in the
production of foam packaging. Originally thought harmless, CFCs have been found
to have a damaging effect on the earths ozone layer, which protects the
Earths surface from the Suns harmful ultraviolet rays. They are
mainly found in aerosol cans deodorant, hairspray, polish, air fresheners, foam
in soft furnishings, carpets, cardboard packaging, fridges and air conditioning
systems. They do not exist anywhere in nature.
