E
Numbers
A huge list of additives, preservatives, colours and sweeteners that are commonly
found in processed food. The E stands for EC (European Community) and all ingredients
have been tested for safety and passed for use across the EC. However, not all
EC countries permit the use of additives and bans are in place on E numbers
known to cause harm in Austria, Sweden & Norway. Some of the E numbers refer
to naturally occurring ingredients such as E160a, which is a natural colouring,
found in carrots and other orange fruit & vegetables and E300, which is
ascorbic acid (vitamin C). However, many E numbers are artificially produced
and can cause minor and severe allergic reactions when ingested. The effects
are wide ranging and many are known to cause headaches, skin rashes, respiratory
problems, intestinal upset, behavioural and attention problems in children and
in severe cases, tumours. It's a good idea to check out a comprehensive list
