Formaldehyde
A toxic, colourless and strong smelling gas that is used as a fixative, preservative
and disinfectant in building materials, soft furnishings, permanent press fabrics
(such as ironing board covers), cosmetics and nail varnish. It is a known irritant
that can cause stinging eyes, rashes, asthma & other respiratory conditions
and is thought to cause nasal and lung cancer in humans. It is one of the biggest
indoor air pollutants and its release into the air is quickened in very hot
or humid conditions. It is advised to keep the home dry and moderately warm
and to open windows regularly to help circulate the air.
