Lead
A highly toxic metal. The dangers of lead have been known for hundreds of years and although it is rare to suffer acute lead poisoning nowadays there is still much concern over low level chronic exposure. Lead is known to effect the brain, causing behavioural difficulties and also intelligence loss. Although the use of lead is being phased out - it was commonly used in plumbing, water pipes, paint, petrol and batteries – low levels remain in most households and it can be absorbed by inhalation and ingestion causing muscle pain, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, loss of consciousness and convulsions. It also finds its way into the home as dust and on the soles of shoes that pick up lead deposits from the soil.
